Rustenburg – Technology is not only for cell phones, computers or fuel… Today, construction has reached new heights with houses being built, even without bricks and cement! What’s more, they can be built in less than 10 days!!
This technology was exposed to locals when Anglo Platinum mine, the Rustenburg Local Municipally (RLM) and Habitat for Humanity in South Africa (HFHSA) handed over a house to the Medimoeng family in Karlienpark, who have been living in a shack for many years. The modern technology house was one of ten houses to be built for ten needy families that were identified by the RLM. The handing-over was attended by the MEC of Housing in the province, Debso Sefanyetso; the Executive mayor of Rustenburg municipality Cllr. Mathew Wolmarans, and representatives of Anglo Platinum and HFHSA.
Although the beneficiaries were identified from needy families in the community, these houses are not RDP houses; They are built by the partners as a way of supporting the Mayoral program. Cllr. Wolmarans exclaimed that RDP houses will be built in good time, but the people should not confuse these houses with RDP houses.
MEC Sefanyetso said that beneficiaries should accept their responsibility to maintain and take good care of the houses built for them, because once they moved in - they are no longer houses but homes. According to a statement issued by the RLM, the minimum design specifications of the houses are based on HFHSA prescriptions and will follow standing RLM- and NHBRC’s (National Home Builders Registration Council) compliance processes. Accordingly HFHSA envisage the project’s construction budget to be R931 000 and therefore only a mere R93 000 per house! Speaking about the history of this project, Mme Modifi said this concept was initially started during the National Nelson Mandela Day on the 67 minutes. “Anglo employers and contractors wanted to give back to the community.
What better way is there to provide people with roofs over their heads? If this could come out during the Nelson Mandela 67 minutes, imagine what could happen if we did it every day”, she further stated. The houses are built by Imison – a company that uses a combination of light weight and energy efficient expanded polystyrene panels, covered with patented sprayed on fiber cement. The technology is said to offer new standards in integrated sustainable development, strength, quality and savings; and it looks and feel like brick/ mortar.
